How Do Breeders Decide Who Gets What Puppy?

We’ve talked time and time again about how to go about choosing the right dog for you and your family. But how does a breeder choose who to share their most precious possessions with?

Some breeders might sell their wares with no regard to the well-being of the puppy or the family. The finest breeders use emotional intelligence to assemble a person or family with the perfect pup. JLDD falls firmly into the latter category.

How do other companies out there do business? Makenzie from our South Carolina doodle breedership has this to say.

“A lot of breeders will have 6 puppies and 6 families in deposit order, sending photos and a blurb of information on each puppy to families in order of deposit dates, leaving it up to some cute photos and 1-3 bullet points on each puppy for a family to choose from.

“If you are number 5 out of 6, you may have 2 puppies to choose from, or if you are family 6, you may be left with 1 puppy, where you can either take them or wait again for a new litter.”

Consider the needs of your family and dog

The two most important factors in this decision are you and your family’s needs and the needs of the new puppy. “A lot of the time color and gender take over the conversation, but part of what we aim to do here at JLDD is to put personality and temperament first in looking at the right fit for a family who applies,” Makenzie advises.

What makes us different from others out there who take as much pride in their work as we do? We sit, play with and learn all of the ins and outs of the pup’s disposition and persona.

Each dog, from day one, is forming their own ideas about itself and its surroundings. We catalog each and every tiny squeak and squawk. We monitor each meal and interaction with the family. We learn who they are for their first seven weeks of trials and testing their boundaries.

From there, we get to know each and every family. We start with a general questionnaire and continue with an in-depth interview over the phone. Having a relationship with any prospective owner is very important to us.

We look past the knee-jerk reaction of color and gender that many oversimplify when looking for a new puppy.

Once we think we have what will be the most ideal match in our dossier or dogs and customers, we email out the information and begin the process of sending our puppies onto the next step in their development.

Photos, genders, coat colors; any pertinent information is distributed, and (we hope) the email’s recipient is added to our litter waitlist. From there, it’s just a matter of time. To the very last day that they’re in our care, we’ve learned everything we can about each and every puppy. Then, we send them to live with their perfect partner.

Yes, there are other processes for finding a forever home. Through years and years of trial and error, we believe that our Exclusive Puppy Matchmaking Process is heads and tails above the rest.

We’ll let Makenzie have the last word on how we decide, as a breeder, who gets which puppy. “JLDD’s mission is to find the puppy who will fit as seamlessly into their new family as they can.” Well put, Makenzie. Well put.
